Assessment FAQ

How much is the assessment?

Approximately $20 per parcel which raises about $160,000 a year to support youth and adult recreation and park maintenance. Presently, the district operates on a mere $14,000 in county revenues.

What will the funds be used for?

The funds will be used to begin the implementation of the BRRPD's Master Plan. Under this plan, the district will be able to employ a full time recreation coordinator to expand the sports and activity offerings for youth while also improving the quality of programs offered. The rec and park district will be able to build hiking trails, offer adult classes and athletic programs along with improving the Magnolia Sports complex and developing an Alta Sierra park.

When does the parcel tax end?

The assessment is renewed annually by the elected Bear River Recreation and Park District Board of Directors. Furthermore, a Citizen's Oversight Committee has been established to insure that the ballot process is secure and that the funds raised by this assessment are spent in accordance with the Master Plan.

How do I get more info on BRRPD?

Contact the District office at 268-PARK (268-7275), or contact us by e-mail below, for more information and to review the current program offerings. You may also want to check out the downloadable Master Plan.

How does this mail campaign work?

Ballots are sent by mail to all parcel and business owners in southern Nevada County. Voters have about 45 days to return their ballot. If over 50% of those who return the ballots approve the assessment by July 12, 2004 then the measure is successful. Ballots may be returned by mail or delivered to the Auditing Firm at the BRRPD Public Hearing on July 12, 2004 at 7 p.m.

What if it fails?

The district will sputter along with minor program offerings and no funds to increase parks nor be able to pursue local, state, federal or private matching funds.
